I kept in touch with a teacher from high school. I am currently learning German. He is not a language teacher. Is it a bad idea for me to share language learning tips with him

I am not sure if I understand you. There is nothing wrong with sharing language tips with anybody. Remembering information is important in many different subjects so you teacher may have great ideas and you also as a language learner 😀
